Zovirax cream

acyclovir

Zovirax cream is an antiviral medication that is used to treat cold sores, which are caused by herpes simplex viruses. This medication helps the body fight the infection by preventing the virus from multiplying. Although Zovirax cream cannot prevent an outbreak, it can help cold sores to heal quicker when applied at the first signs of an outbreak. Potential side effects include dry lips and dry skin.

Acyclovir is used to treat the symptoms of chickenpox, shingles, herpes virus infections of the genitals (sex organs), the skin, the brain, and mucous membranes (lips and mouth), and widespread herpes virus infections in newborns. Acyclovir is also used to prevent recurrent genital herpes infections. Although acyclovir will not cure herpes, it does help relieve the pain and discomfort and helps the sores (if any) heal faster.

Directions for use
-The medication is to be used on the lips and skin of the face; it is not to be ingested or to be used inside the mouth or nose.
-You should use disposable rubber, latex, or similar gloves to apply Zovirax cream in order to prevent spreading the infection to other parts of your body. Or, make sure to wash your hands thoroughly after each application.
-For the medication to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed. Make sure to take Zovirax cream as directed by your healthcare provider.
-For Herpes Cold Sores: Apply Zovirax cream to the affected area 5 times a day for 4 days. Therapy should begin as soon as possible after the first sign of a cold sore such as a bump, tingling, redness, or itchiness.
-Dosing Information: There is only one standard recommended dose of Zovirax cream, regardless of your age, weight, or other medical problems.
-Zovirax cream should not be used in or near the eyes, or inside the nose or mouth. The medication can, however, be applied on the outside of the lips. Apply the cream with your fingers to clean, dry skin. Be sure to wash your hands before and after applying Zovirax cream, and avoid bathing or swimming afterward to prevent it from washing off. Do not cover the cold sore with a bandage or make-up unless your doctor approves.

Important safety information:
-Do not use Zovirax Cream for genital herpes.
-Do not use other skin products such as cosmetics, sunscreen, or lip balm on the cold sore area while you are using Zovirax Cream unless otherwise instructed by your doctor.
-Do not get Zovirax Cream in your eyes or on the inside of your nose or mouth. If Zovirax Cream gets in your eyes, flush them with cool tap water.
-Zovirax Cream may cause harm if it is swallowed. If you may have taken it by mouth, contact your poison control center or emergency room right away.
-Zovirax Cream should not be used in children younger than 12 years old; safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed.
-Pregnancy and breast-feeding: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Zovirax Cream while you are pregnant. It is not known if Zovirax Cream is found in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you use Zovirax Cream, check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby.
