Movatec

meloxicam

Movatec is in a class of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and are used to treat pain and/or inflammation. Prostaglandins are chemicals that contribute to inflammation within joints, and it is the inflammation that leads to the common symptoms of pain, tenderness and swelling associated with arthritis. Meloxicam blocks the enzymes that make prostaglandins (cyclooxygenase 1 and 2) and reduces the levels of prostaglandins. As a result, inflammation and its accompanying symptoms are reduced.

Meloxicam, an oxicam derivative, belongs to a newer family of NSAIDS called COX-2 inhibitors that block the enzyme cyclooxygenase-2, which is thought to trigger pain and inflammation in the body. A related enzyme, but somewhat different, is cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1). It produces biochemicals needed to maintain normal blood supply to the kidneys and GI tract. Previous NSAIDs were unable to inhibit cyclooxygenase-2 without also inhibiting cyclo-oxygenase-1, hence they produced unpleasant side effects. Meloxicam has shown, at theraputic dosing, to selectively inhibit COX-2 over COX-1.

It is interesting to note that some forms of cancer such as carcinomas (e.g. Squamous Cell Carcinoma) appear to exhibit COX-2 activity. Studies suggest that these types of NSAIDs may have anti-tumor effects besides their anti-inflammatory effects. This may make them useful in palliative care where tumors are inoperable. Like other NSAIDS, meloxicam acts to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis thereby exerting an anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-exudative and antipyretic effect. It is able to reduce leukocyte infiltration into inflamed tissue.

Directions for use

The recommended dose of Movatec for adults is 7.5 milligrams (mg) daily in a single dose. Take this medication by mouth, usually once daily, or as directed by your doctor. Drink a full glass of water (8 ounces or 240 milliliters). Do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after you have taken this drug. If stomach upset occurs while taking this medication, take it with food, milk, or an antacid. Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy.

Do not take more than 15 milligrams (mg) per day because higher doses increase the chance of stomach side effects. It may take up to two weeks before the full benefits of this drug take effect. Use this medication regularly in order to get the most benefit from it. Remember to use it at the same time each day.

Side effects

Stomach upset, nausea, drowsiness, or diarrhea may occur. To prevent these common side effects, it is recommended that most NSAIDs be taken with food or milk. NSAIDs may cause ulcers in the stomach and/or small intestine. A few NSAIDs are designed to be less damaging to the stomach and small intestine, and, therefore, they may be taken with or without food. Meloxicam is an example of one of these NSAIDs, but, nevertheless, it should be taken cautiously without food.

Do not take Movatec if you have ever had an allergic reaction to another NSAID such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil), or naproxen (Naprosyn), or have had asthma attacks or skin eruptions caused by drugs of this type.

This medication may be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Taking meloxicam during the last 3 months of pregnancy may result in birth defects. Do not take meloxicam during pregnancy unless your doctor has told you to. Meloxicam can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Do not give this medicine to a child younger than 2 years old without the advice of a doctor.

Movatec should be stored in a dry place at room temperature, 15-30°C (59-86°F).
